Stitch after stitch, human-like fabric creatures grow out of Kristina Skantze's hands. She carefully shapes body parts and figures from silk knitwear and polyester batting. Hand sewing accompanies her in everyday life and she always carries a body part to sew on. When she works on buses and trains, it arouses curiosity. It opens up for human encounters that can conceivably give the figures their own life experience that shapes their emotional expression.
Ronneby Konsthall
The interplay between body and emotional life is central to Kristina’s creation. For the exhibition at Kulturcentrum Ronneby konsthall, she has particularly drawn inspiration from children’s way of expressing emotions with their whole bodies. In play, things come to life and are allowed to reflect feelings, fantasies and experiences. Objects become carriers of stories and memories for people of all ages. They can keep us company, arouse a desire for care or become intrusive.
Kristina Skantze is educated at i.a. The University of Design and Crafts, Gothenburg and Konstfack. She lives and works in Stockholm and has exhibited around Sweden and internationally since 2011.
