The exhibition examines the works of Konrad Mägi (1878‒1925), a classic Estonian artist, based on the results of technical studies. By using modern methods, it is possible to detect what is invisible to the naked eye, i.e. underdrawings, overpainting, changes made in the composition and colour corrections. Thus, we better understand the structure, painting technique and materials of each individual work and become familiar with the artist’s style.

The exhibition includes the paintings Kasaritsa Landscape (1915‒1917), Ruins on Capri Island (1922‒1923) and Venice (1922‒1923), which can be compared to the x-ray photos made of them. On interactive screens, you will be able see how the artist’s paintings look under ultraviolet, infrared or side light.
Konrad Mägi in Close-up is based on Darja Jefimova’s master’s thesis, which includes documentation on approximately thirty Konrad Mägi paintings and which she defended at the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2023.
The exhibition is being organised in cooperation with the Konrad Mägi Foundation.
