Ida Rödén's work springs from a stubborn curiosity; the desire to understand without claiming to know. As the journey progresses, various companions appear. The conversations that arise take shape as drawn and sculptural worlds that follow their own logic and inner order. It's about the real sides of the fantasy, about the story, about who gets a place. A strait, an ocean, an island - they are often named after those who are considered to have arrived there first - but rarely is it actually the first, rather the most prominent, that gets its name recorded on the maps and in the history books. Others are erased, perhaps become a footnote, if they have been written down at all.
In the exhibition Jon and Jonas – fellow travelers among waves and rocks, Rödén shows discoveries she recreates through conversations with two scientific travelers from the 18th century. The acquaintance with Jonas Falck was established in 2014 during the artist’s trip to Lapland and further developed during a stay at Bergmangårdarna on Fårö in 2016. Conversations with Jon Brand began in 2023 during an expedition across the Arctic Ocean. Rödén was invited by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat as part of a research expedition on board the icebreaker Oden. The exhibition shows drawings and ceramic fossils of mutated animals from Lapland and extinct aquatic animals from Fårö, as well as drawings of islands that rest far down in our deepest glacial seas.
