A cryptid is a creature that either exists or does not exist. For centuries, scientifically unproven and orally transmitted anecdotes about such mythological creatures have captured our imaginations and typically reflected our innermost fears and desires.
Joye Holder's The Cryptid Hunter exhibition features artificial intelligence-created, often grotesque and distorted creatures that populate the Internet's invisible graveyard. These digital apparitions resemble legendary cryptids whose existence is based on collective beliefs and the blurring of reality and fiction.
The Cryptid Hunter is Joey Holder’s first solo exhibition in Finland and part of her ‘Cryptid’ project. The project has previously been exhibited at Art Basel (Paris+) and X Museum (Beijing), this is a new installation created especially for Galleria Sculptor in Helsinki. Holder’s work has been shown internationally at exhibitions including Harvard Museum of Natural History, Athens Biennale, London’s Design Museum, Biennale of Sydney, Transmediale & Venice Biennale. She has been featured in publications including New York Times, Artforum, Frieze and The Guardian.
