Illusion at the Tampere Art Museum is one of the first large interactive spatial art exhibitions in Finland. The works on display include media art, installations, immersive art and sculpture. The artists are pioneers of Finnish interactive art: Petri Eskelinen, Hanna Haaslahti, Markus Kåhre, Jaana Partanen, Pasi Rauhala, Heidi Tikka and Jarno Vesala.
Interactive and immersive art in particular creates an illusion for the viewer, an experience of being part of the universe of the work instead of viewing art traditionally from the outside. The viewer is immersed into the universe of the work, either literally or figuratively.
These works are the artists’ recent output from the past few years, both works created specifically for this exhibition and works from past decades that have become classics of interactive art. In some of the works, viewer participation is physical and active, in others, more subtle spatial and psychological insight.
NB! The darkness in the exhibition can be exciting for young or sensitive visitors.

Liisa Hietanen – Turns
Sculptor Liisa Hietanen from Hämeenkyrö (b.1981, Lohja) depicts everyday objects and residents of Hämeenkyrö in her crocheted and knitted sculptures that she calls Villagers. The models for the works have been discovered during everyday encounters and places such as the library or on the way home while walking a dog.
The key characteristic of Liisa Hietanen’s working method is slowly meeting and getting to know the models during the process. Finishing a single work requires turning the crocheted work in one’s hands hundreds or even thousands of times during the working process. The title of the exhibition, Turns, refers to this as well as the turns in human life depicted by Hietanen in her works. After they have been finished, her works are always first displayed in public for local residents in places such as cafeterias, florist’s shops or home electronics shops.
Liisa Hietanen has attracted international attention, and Twists is her first private exhibition in a museum. It is a continuation of the series of exhibitions of Pirkanmaa artists at the Tampere Art Museum.
