When encountering Ida Pettersson Preutz's visual worlds, something happens to the eye and perception. The colorful patterned images force perception and one is swept into an almost hypnotic state. A contradictory feeling of both meditative states and more intense disturbances arises. In the patchwork patterns, which can be described as colorful chessboards, marvelous effects are created where surface and depth work refinedly with each other.
It is an artistry that is characterized by an obvious desire for experimentation and a true sense of needlework. The fabrics are hand-dyed or screen-printed. The colors are often intense and vibrant. What emerges when solid needlework is combined with the pattern of repetition is interesting. Pettersson Preutz works in series where all individual works ultimately complement each other. The result is similar, but nuances and details are tested and moved. The front and back are like two parallel worlds that exist dependent on each other. One part is seemingly perfect and the other bears traces of the hand. The careful work and process take time. A pixel is just a pixel, and a square box in a patchwork quilt is just a box, but in larger numbers it transforms into something completely different. Something greater grows out of the individual.
