Hugleikur Dagsson has published 30 books, written 3 plays, directed his own animated series for television and also gained popularity as a stand-up comedian. In Finland, 12 comics albums have been published by Dagsson, published by Atena Kustannus. Hugleikur Dagsson’s visual world draws from Keith Haring’s legacy. In addition to stick figures, his works are characterized by various symbols and objects, such as crosses, hearts, penises, guns and prams. Dagsson’s cheeky humor does not twist or bow, but strikes at the core of topics perceived as trivial. The drawings, consisting of sparse lines, contain the darkest humor, but at the same time they are tender. Among other comic artists, Dagsson has been influenced by Johnny Ryan, Sam Henderson and Bill Watterson.
“When I start drawing, I’m interested to see what happens next. At first I drew a couple of sticks on paper without knowing what they were related to. It turned out that lack of ideas can be a gateway to countless ideas – even to the extent that I never have time to implement them all,” says Dagsson. Dagsson’s first international solo exhibition contains a collection of ideas that he hasn’t had time to delve into before. Meanwhile, Dagsson is the first international guest of Galleria Kuvitus, which turns five years old in February. The exhibition opens as part of the Dagsson Does Finland stand-up tour around Finland. The tour is organized by W&T Comedy.
