Firewhip in gallery Metropol 6 m2
&
(temporary).normal.tangled. in Metroli Cabinet
February 5 – March 6, 2022
Opening event on Saturday, February 5 at 6 PM, Vana-Kalamaja 46, Tallinn
Helen Tago is a graphic artist with an interest in experimental printing techniques and space-related art.
In this exhibition at the Metropol Gallery, she presents two separate exhibitions, the connecting link of which
is representation of stories as layered interventions of visuals and form in space.
In gallery Metropol 6m2 you can see an installative graphic work “Firewhip”, which is inspired by the burnt main
building of the Muhu art residency and the elk hemp that always emerges first in such places.
Narrow-leaved elk hemp (Epilobium angustifolium), popularly also firecracker and firewhip) prefers to grow in
lightrich places, such as curbs, fires, clearings and drained bogs. It is a pioneer species and is able to cover
new areas, such as after a forest fire, and grows in landfills, rubbish dumps and bomb wells, as it is more
resistant to pollution than most plants. (Wikipedia)
The charred logs have been replaced on the art farm today, but the elk hemp wakes up every year like the
artists hope of a house that keeps the wind and water will come true.
At the Metropol Cabinet exhibition ”(temporary). normalcy. puntras. ” in center of attention is a monotypical
work depicting the layers of a young person’s development in a world with an anxious atmosphere, presented
together with an interactive element based on the specificity of the cupboard.
We settled of experiences and moments. We also integrate what we want to avoid and get tangled with
oursselves. Creating order out of chaos is a human desire. By finding and connecting points around you, you
can form a support network, and weaving is an activity that helps you stay in the moment better and relieves
anxiety.
Visitors of the exhibition are invited to weave their patterns between the cupboard buttons and leave patterns
and messages.

Helen Tago (b. 1980) graduated from the graphics department of the Estonian Academy of Arts, continuing as
an artist to acquire new, safer graphic techniques and materials on her own and with various masters. As an
artist, her works have been most influenced by the wasteland and the city: its rhythms and seemingly invisible
spaces. Places that have been traversed hundreds of times and where fragments of information recorded in the
subconscious are beginning to form their own world. In recent years, she has been working to convert twodimensional graphics into three-dimensional ones: folding snapshots and playing with their form and contennt.
