He arrived at the meeting place exactly five minutes before the appointed time, as usual. When the car engine stopped, the dim side street suddenly became quiet, as if the heart of the city with its flashing neon lights and traffic noise was not only a few kilometers away. Glancing at his watch, he lit a cigarette and watched how the cloud of smoke blown out of the car window floated over the rain-soaked street cobblestones, until a lazy gust of wind that happened to pass by finally carried it away.

The smoking stranger leaned more comfortably on the car seat, closed his eyes for a moment and thought about the doctor’s urgent recommendation to give up cigarettes and eat vegetables to relieve the need for nicotine. The mere thought of carrying a bunch of carrots in your jacket pocket instead of a cigar and a lighter had a depressing effect. Do you get angry at your incompetent idiot colleagues at a meeting and rush to the front of the office to slurp half a turnip to calm your nerves? You could just as well offer yourself to work in the circus. Exactly on the hour, a familiar figure in a raincoat appeared from the darkness, sat down in the passenger seat and carefully placed the briefcase on his knees…
