Just as the environment shapes people, the people inhabiting the urban space shape it. The beauty of a city extends beyond famous landmarks or intricate architecture. Beauty lies in ordinary people and simple moments, which over time have created the heart of our home-town.
“The idea for the exhibition came to me on my fourth train ride in a week from Tartu to Valga. I thought about why I live in Valga if I have to leave so often and why I always come back. This small town, which is often considered boring and unremarkable, holds a special place in my heart. Having grown up here, the town has influenced me differently during various stages of my life. The present moment and memories are closely intertwined here, and thus the paintings act as windows into the past and present, revealing the urban space through my personal experience,” explains the artist.
Hedi Kuhi (b. 1998) studies painting at the Pallas University of Applied Sciences. In 2022, she was awarded a painting scholarship by the Hotel Pallas. Kuhi gets inspiration from nature and the people around her. She mainly makes acrylic and oil paintings, and charcoal and graphite drawings.
The Hotel Pallas painting scholarship was founded by the Cultural Endowment of Tartu, the Hotel Pallas and the Pallas University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the Tartu Artists’ Union to support the development of painting and the creative output of students. The scholarship is awarded to a single student or a group of at most three students. In addition to 1000 euros, an exhibition at the Tartu Art House is arranged for the winner(s). Previously the scholarship has been awarded to Mia Melanie Saar, Maris Paal and Caroliina Luhamets.
The exhibition is supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
