Anna-Liisa Kree is a photographer who is deeply engaged with social issues. Over the past few years, she has been documenting her son, who has Down syndrome. Through her lens, she reflects on societal inclusion and acceptance while also processing her personal experience as the mother of a child with special needs. The use of analog photography, both in shooting and developing process, allows the artist to pause and truly process the captured moments.
According to artist, the concept of a village, at the exhibition title, is not merely a physical space but rather a metaphor for the people around us. It symbolizes our close circle, those whose paths run parallel to ours, sharing both our joys and our sorrows. These are open and honest individuals who stand against injustice and celebrate both the similarities and differences that make us unique. Shared experiences influence one another, whether in moments of happiness or hardship.
Anna-Liisa Kree explains: “The life of our village revolves around Elias. He is the heart of our small community, both in good times and in bad. His companions in daily life are his twin brother and sister. Together, they do what siblings do: play, compete, and, of course, have disagreements that they eventually resolve.”
Just as diverse experiences and unique individuals enrich every village, thriving communities understand this and embrace the value of all their members. The photographs featured in this exhibition were taken between 2022 and 2024, capturing the richness and authenticity of these shared moments.
