In the 20th century, photography became a sign-creation machine and developed into a whole system that functions as an effective apparatus for reproducing simulacra. The canon of truth in photography is the building block of our public facade in social media, in the shadow of which our psyches sooner or later suffer.
“Photography is a paradox: it can tell both truth and lies. The question is always whose
narrative is followed at the moment the story is told. In today’s consumer culture, the media try to maintain an illusion of reality at all costs to keep us shopping and entertained while our personal data or behavioural profiles are sold in the global market. We are no longer the audience of the society of the spectacle, but we ourselves are the product, and for the time being everyone seems to be at peace with this,” explains the curator Kaisa Eiche.
