In working with the exhibition, she has been particularly interested in the term “construction”. She has explored the physical graphic surface, as well as expanding it by creating large architectural frameworks in wood. In the working process, the graphic design language has developed in relation to the architectural sculptures, through the exhibition an echo is thus created between form and surface. Ground massexamines the concept of “construction” also on a conceptual level – Thorkildsen reflects on how we can use our thoughts to both build fantastic thought constructions or to design concrete solutions to complex problems.
Grundmasse’s investigations of the term “construction” create a complex expression that works between the organic and the mechanical. Thorkildsen’s work process is also the result of a meeting between intuition and planning. Her non-figurative expression starts with improvisations. The work takes shape as an exploratory process, where the materials’ practical, visual and associative functions are assessed and challenged. In the process, she works with systems and methods to bring out the structure of the materials, in addition to giving the visual language room to develop over time. The result is unique works. Thorkildsen’s reflections in her work on the exhibition are linked to changes and ecology, but in the finished visual expression she strives for a result that opens up the viewer’s own associations.
