With Trevor Mathison's first exhibition in Norway, From Signal to Decay: Volume 6 , Atelier Nord's gallery is filled with an immersive soundscape where the building's history becomes part of the aural experience. In sound archaeological fashion, Mathisons combines video, drawing, sculpture, archival material and sound to stretch time and dissolve space.
From Signal to Decay has been shown in different versions, including in London and Brussels, and is now shown in an Oslo version as part of the Ultima festival. The installation at Atelier Nord consists of several elements: a video shown inside a black box, filmed by Mathison on the Isle of Skye in Scotland; a sculpture consisting of draped cassette tapes attached to the wall, and an organic soundscape that permeates the rest of the building. The sound environment is composed of the building’s unique location, vibrations and resonance, including heating and electrical systems, as well as real-time ambient sounds that are added to the mix via a microphone mounted on the outside of the building.
From Signal to Decay: Volume 1 at the CCA Gallery in London was described by The Guardian newspaper as “a fascinating exhibition” and “an unexpected and thought-provoking delight”. This latest and site-specific version of the installation represents a unique opportunity to experience Mathison’s sound art as it continues to evolve.
