I encountered the works in my exhibition – as objects – already in the 1980s and early 1990s, but the transition from the materiality of moments of discovery to what is visible in the exhibition required time and also a change in myself. Those discoveries travelled with me when I changed places of residence and for more random reasons. Some from Vaasa to Seinäjoki, then back to Vaasa and from there to Turku and again to Vaasa and with a 20-year delay to Helsinki. Some got here by a more direct route from Turku already in the late 1990s. And the traffic didn’t stay between cities: when stocks changed I moved the goods locally.
How do the transported objects feel now? When I want to work with them, physical doing can become an event of development and imagination. Objects become works. Color and shape change. Also the written text presents them according to my imagination. It completes my material handprint in the non-material direction. I trust these encounters and transitions, the premonition that they matter. As if something in these found objects requires changes to be made to them and a mental picture of them.
Our surroundings are horrified and hazy. The logic of commodity production and capital circulation has segmented the prospects of ”Disappearance” around us. Most of the goods are waste goods, out of use. We get used to them and don’t notice them. The nameless ones remain outside, as non-cases like discarded goods, the past on their faces. But it is enough that they are brought up and more familiar way of approaching them starts.
The works in this exhibition tell about it. They are wrapped up in my imagination as I prepare them. What is visible in the gallery space is described in the exhibition catalog and text board in its own way. For me, those different verbalizations gave me the opportunity to add the fun of fable and comparison the physical work. In fact, it is presicely the imaginary that is ”discovery”, non-material but matter-experiensed ”impression”.
