Skate, that is skateboarding culture, landed extensively in Finland in the 1980s. Since the 1980s, it has become an established part of Finnish youth and urban culture. Artsi’s FLIP! exhibition reflects how skateboarding, as a subculture, has impacted the visual artists engaged in skating and how it has been interpreted in visual arts.
When you go beyond the surface, will you find a “skate rat,” colored by road rash and road dust, or something else entirely? The FLIP! exhibition seeks connections between the visuality of skateboarding, do-it-your-self culture, and art works of contemporary visual artists.
The FLIP! exhibition consists of a wide and varied selection of art works by contemporary artists and explores the visual culture related to the world of skateboarding. The exhibition is conducted in cooperation with Vantaa Art Museum Artsi and a team of experts on skateboarding culture.
