Emma Haase is a multidisciplinary artist from the United States currently living in Pärnu, Estonia. Throughout her years of practice, Emma’s work is inspired by reflections on memories of her childhood, the relationships she sees around her, and the emotions provoked by them. Although Emma works in many mediums including photography, film, ceramics, metals, and other sculptural materials, her specialty is utilizing glass to bring her pieces to life. She earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts from The Ohio State University, where she specialized in Glass Blowing and Casting. She went on to earn her Masters of Art and Science from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa; VICARTE, where she did extensive research and development in Glass and Ceramics. Emma currently teaches glass blowing in Estonian Academy of Arts (Eesti Kunstiakadeemia) in Tallinn.
Over the past 10+ years, she has researched both the artistic and scientific parts of the glass production, recycling, and casting processes. Which led her to an in depth study on the casting of vertebrae and thus the creation of this exhibition.
The glass vertebrae featured in this exhibition were the result of a year and a half long study. Each one is an investigation on the effects of heat and time on glass. All of the vertebrae from these studies, even the ones deemed unsuccessful, are used in the pieces displayed in this exhibition. Together they reflect the successes and failures we all carry on our backs, a visual representation of the stress that makes and breaks us as humans.
This exhibition brings to life Emma’s visual interpretation of the feeling of stress. Stress is a feeling most humans have experienced and one many struggle to communicate. Finding an emotion that we can all relate to is difficult and even with this similar feeling we all experience stress in different ways. This exhibition reflects the many successes and failures it took to reach this point for Emma and aims to evoke a sense of shared understanding that stress inevitably impacts us all throughout our lives.

Special thanks to my husband, Roland Kasenurm, who helped build the pedestals and metal structure, provided moral support for my work on this exhibition and took care of our little one so I could create my artworks.
