Darkness and light – two fundamental opposites that have always fascinated. The struggle to get out of the darkness, to have the strength, to dare, to want, can sometimes become overwhelming, but many still fight on. The light, the relief, brings calm and lifts us up. In her first major exhibition, Emelie Paulsson presents images taken during a personal healing process. Her photography has been a support through times of depression and in retrospect it is clear that the images grew out of a feeling of tiredness of just surviving and a longing to be here, to feel life. The exhibition shows darkness, but also a quest for light.
“For many years I felt that piece by piece of myself was stolen along the way. There was so little left of me that I no longer knew who I was. For me, art is like a kind of puzzle that is put together in an attempt to slowly bring oneself home again. When the darkness has sometimes ripped into me, I have forced myself to stay with the hope that there must also be light.
