Longing doesn’t differentiate between space and time. When it comes to longing, there are only distances, as well as those intricate items—the poses, expressions and details—that these distances separate from us. As longing moves within the soul, it opens up the doors to all sorts of beliefs: the past might not yet be past, the future may already be here, but at the core of longing only its inevitability holds true: the inevitability of never being able to bridge the distance which gave birth to longing in the first place.
The new works by Eero Alev seem to be exercises in defining these unbridgeable distances: through both the crystalline clarity of memories and the fragmentary, many-faceted understanding which comes to us in our dreams. Through the sensitive technique he brings to his painting and the thoroughly felt emotionality of his compositions, Alev manages to capture the fine balance between what we return to in our thoughts, and what comes back to haunt us of its own accord. In short, the artist has taken it upon himself to illustrate the scale on which longing shapes the soul.
Eero Alev (b. 1983) graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a BA in painting and a MA in contemporary art. He currently teaches drawing and painting at the Estonian Academy of Arts and works as a freelance artist.
