Visualisation of puns and sayings is the basis on which Daukantė Subačiūtė (artist’s pseudonym Daukantė) builds her art. She has said, “Being visually minded, I have a soft spot for wordplay. On words, I can build a pictorial mind game.”
Another dimension Daukantė exploits for material is pop culture, which she uses to underline the absurdity of the modern world. For example, the work “The only things that will be left after a nuclear holocaust are cockroaches and Cher” is inspired, according to Daukantė, from the way the singer Cher and many other artistes give repeated farewell concerts.
Daukantė has a passion for quirky objects. She finds expression for them in her art and also creates them. She has an intriguing series of lamps which are with a hint of design art. The night lights have been created for a scared cheerleader or a scared cardiologist – everyone is scared of the darkness. There are very interesting furry silk-lined bags, with logos of large retail chains embroidered on them, to emphasise the madness of the consumerist world.
Everyday situations are what the artist finds the most intriguing, as everyday life is filled with great stories to marvel and laugh at.
Dauknate Subačiūtė (born 1991) is a Lithuanian artist and illustrator living and working in Vilnius. She is a graduate of Vilnius Academy of Art in Graphic Design and she earned her master’s degree in Information Design from the Design Academy Eindhoven, Netherlands. She has won reputable awards in the USA, Japan, Poland, Spain, Netherlands and Lithuania.
