Jaworska paints in many layers of acrylic paint and uses various squeegees, rollers and stamps to create a depth in her surfaces – her signature move is also to generously splash paint over her motifs. These characteristic splashes of hers add to the dynamic, or even explosive, expression in her works and she hardly ever creates delicate or still paintings.
Women in gorgeous dress are a recurring motif in Danka Jaworska’s paintings and can be seen to be seated or standing alone, as well as in various constellations with other women or men. The subdued body language and facial expressions of these figures are in stark contrast to the dramatic palette of the paintings. Actually, the art viewer is rarely able to discern any personal features in Jaworska’s painted figures with their faces consisting of dark, anonymous contours and it is left open to interpretation who they really are. The narrative of each work is thus neither linked to a specific person nor abundantly clear, but is conveyed through the subtle gestures of the protagonists in the paintings, such as the tilt of a head or a hand reaching out.
There is a particular mood conveyed in Jaworska’s work – almost a sense of mystery or melancholy about them, but with a presence of light and beauty. Her works appear as dreamlike images or traces from a bygone era that the viewer perhaps does not have a connection to but yet yearns for.Danka Jaworska resides and works in Stockholm.
