The exhibition will present works by El Greco and Nordic artists in order to explore the Nordic reception and construction of El Greco in the decades 1885-1945, a period during which the artist becomes a cult figure before fading from view then being recently rediscovered. The exhibition will also address issues such as the image of the modern artist, translocality, and the migration of expressive form and imagery over time.

The working title CUT AND PASTE is based on J.F. Willumsen’s description of the technique of El Greco. In his book on the Greek artist, Willumsen describes him as “cutting up and piecing together like a child,” pointing towards a reinterpretation of El Greco in the light of modern technology and the borrowing and transformation of elements from disparate contexts through sampling and cut-and-paste techniques. The project thereby links to contemporary issues of the image, as well as challenging our understanding of Nordic art during the period under study.
