Christelle Mas (b. 1984, Paris) lives and works in Finland, focusing on future visions that explore the coexistence of technology and species. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in the philosophy of art and a Master’s degree in arts, both from the Sorbonne University in Paris. Mas is a member of the Bioart Society and the Association of Photographic Artists in Finland. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is included in several public and private collections, including those of the Oulu and Kemi Art Museums.
The exhibition features Mas’s video series “Living Codes”, which portrays the radical transformations of living organisms in a future world. In Mas’s vision, unconventional science enhances organisms with new traits to help them survive in a rapidly changing environment. In contrast to common warnings about genetic manipulation and species extinction, Mas offers a utopian view of the future—one where biological diversity is celebrated and amplified.
The video series was created in collaboration with the Oulu Biocenter in Finland, using various 3D microscopes, including a scanning electron microscope, tomography, and light microscopy. These technologies allow Mas to capture intricate details of insects and other creatures, transforming them into visually captivating images that prompt viewers to reflect on the future of life on Earth.
The exhibition at Jakobi Gallery is open until October 25th, Tuesday to Friday, from 1 PM to 6 PM.
