Maria Evestus’s works interpret the increasingly layered world of history through the blending of different times and symbols, creating dreamlike illustrative pieces. These are open-ended narratives that invite viewers to explore their deeper aspects through a facade of familiar nostalgia.
“As an artist, I consciously address the collective subconscious of viewers through nostalgically familiar symbols, often derived from nature, folklore, and legends, sometimes mixed with elements of 20th and 21st-century pop culture,” says Evestus.
The artist adds that an important part of her works is their carefully chosen limited color palette and rhythm, with the main source of inspiration being Nordic nature and various substantive and formal contrasts.
Maria Evestus graduated from the Tartu Art College and has organized over 20 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 40 group exhibitions in both Estonia and Finland. Her work is inspired by medieval and sacred art, mysticism, fairy tales, myths, pop surrealism, psychedelia, and nature.
