Material is meaning. The story we tell begins from material we use. The meaning, state, properties of the material – it’s all comes part of the story.
Material is value. The value and valuableness of material is an increasingly important topic. What is the resource we need to make yarn, fabric, or any other (textile) material? Where or by whom is it produced? What do we know about the material we work with? How do we use this resource? What new value do we give to the material through our creation?
Material is character. Every material has its own state and character, which largely determines what and in which technique it is used. Thickness, gloss, flexibility, smoothness, structure, durability… there are much more variations.
Material is memory. It carries inside knowledge of its maker, its previous user, its long-lost company or maker. Can we read it? Does this memory come with the work and reach the viewer?
