Johanson has mostly made semi-abstract paintings with muted colours where the location and characters seem to hide in some foggy dream realm. This time, however, she surprises us with bright landscapes bursting with sunny energy where the thick brush strokes convey the playfulness found in nature in summer. The world is a beautiful place!

The artist responds: “The moments when the world around me seems to disintegrate are not uncommon. Alarms sound everywhere, the general hectic atmosphere paralyses our thoughts and steals away our courage. I would like to hide behind the seven seas, to cover my ears and eyes. To just hope. That is why I take a moment to rest my eyes and my heart. To then once again, despite everything…”Pille Johanson (b 1962) has graduated from the Painting Department of the University of Tartu (BA and MA). Since 2012, she works at the Pallas University of Applied Sciences as the assistant head and teacher of the Painting Department. Earlier she has worked as a translator. This is her first personal exhibition at the Tartu Art House.
