Leonhard Lapin has been playing chess with his death for a long time in his work and life. His matches with the series "Partii" started in 2006 and the series has been exhibited in many parts of abroad.

The original structure of the works is the chessboard in both ready-made and large motif format. However, these paintings, which sometimes develop into installations, are not only related to the sport that is symbolic of Estonia, but also to the historical origin and significant heritage of chess. Chess is believed to have originated in India, the ancient Gupta Empire, from where it spread to Persia and Arabia and from there to Europe. Alchemists thought that chess symbolically reflected real life and was associated with many mystical beliefs. Only later did chess become a pastime and a sport.

In addition to playfulness, Chess is also interested in the dominant field thinking, intuitive action and thus mental qualities and freedom of personality in a given set of rules and structure. Chess is life and life is chess. Everyone is welcome to play their games.

The works belong to Al Paldrok’s art collection.
