The exhibition of the Saaremaa Museum Foundation “Through the Rebellion to a Free State” will be at the top of Kuressaare Castle. The exhibition introduces the history of the tragic Saaremaa rebellion that broke out in February 1919 behind the Estonian War of Independence (1918–20). This controversial event has most affected the beginning of the Republic of Estonia in Muhu and Saaremaa, of which 100 years passed in 2019.

At the exhibition, you can see short stories printed on canvas from the background of the uprising to its suppression, more colorful facts and the most important people related to the theme, along with photos from the Saaremaa Museum, the National Archives and private collector Rein Saksakulmu. The exhibition with a unique concept is complemented by period-time clothes from the collections of Siiri Heinmaa and MS Vintage.

The exhibition was opened for the first time on February 15, 2019 at the Kuressaare Theater, offering visual support for a history conference on the same topic organized by the Saaremaa Museum (Piret Hiie-Kivi), which brought together The exhibition was also a good addition to the new production of the Saaremaa Rebellion, which premiered at the Kuressaare Theater in March 2019, “Tasa, quietly rowing clouds” (Urmas Lennuk – Raivo Trass). The exhibition has also been opened in Tallinn at the Maarjamäe Castle of the Estonian History Museum (February 2 – August 20, 2019), at the Narva Castle (October 2, 2019 – January 14, 2020) and in the Noora building of the National Archives in Tartu (October 3 – November 27, 2020).

The curator of the exhibition is Piret Hiie-Kivi, curator-general of the Saaremaa Museum Foundation, and the concept of the exhibition was completed within the exhibition design course of the Estonian Academy of Arts, where the students were supervised by Haiko Kilkson and STEAM Exhibitions OÜ. The exhibition was part of the Republic of Estonia’s 100 events program.
