NOBA Nordic Baltic contemporary art platform

Tõnis Laanemaa is a graphic artist whose strong compositional approach and lyrical handwriting cannot be confused with any other author. The common line for the Viinistu Barrel Gallery exhibition is the thematic continuity that the artist has carried working on for 53 years. The barrel gallery is divided into two, one exhibits primarily human and universe through metaphorical images, and the other Estonian themes - nearly 40 works have been exhibited from 1968 to the present day.

The title of the exhibition is inspired by Tõnis Laanemaa’s work Infinity. The infinity of a work of art can already be grasped from the artist’s point of view, then the title of the exhibition includes the idea to bring to the viewer, the common part with the universe, so that abstract and elusive infinity becomes more concrete.

Laanemaa studied at Tartu Art School and the artist’s first art teacher Johannes Võerahansu have left a strong impact of closeness to nature in Laanemaa’s work, which distinguishes his work from the aesthetics of other members of ANK64. As a recognized poster artist, his symbolic language has haunted us, which is why the exhibition also features posters to show how filigree the artist can play with the power of various symbols. In graphic art Laanemaa also uses the same ability of a poster artist, to divide an image into large components, combining a geometric structure and an ornamental background, where one image grows from another.

The artist has been inspired by science, especially the theory of relativity and, of course, music. The exhibition is accompanied by a sound work authored by renowned musician Taavi Laatsit alias Galaktlan, who has collaborated with Tõnis Laanemaa for over 15 years. In creating the sound work, the specifics of the place have been taken into account, leaving enough air between the sounds and the elements of organ sounds added at the request of Laanemaa, which emphasizes the acoustic peculiarity of the room.
