“The Males” is a 16-part ceramic sculpture series exploring masculinity, self-display, and dominance. In nature, male birds often attract attention through elaborate plumage and courtship rituals; here, these behaviours are amplified to the point of absurdity. Phallic forms and scrotums merge with the bird bodies, transforming sexuality into a visible and overt element of the sculptures. Mounted on the wall, the works take on the appearance of trophies… not of conquered prey, but of the male himself, his body, and his performance of masculinity. The series moves between beauty and vulgarity, elegance and the grotesque, inviting the viewer to first smile and then question why such a demonstrative “male bird” feels strangely familiar. The sculptures are modelled by hand, with their poses based on real-life models—friends of the artist—whose bodily postures were translated into bird forms.
