The Bear Pine of Timi, 2025

Linocut, silkscreen

The work belongs to a triptych depicting three significant sacred grove trees, each carrying layers of history—from shifting state regimes and religions to the movement and disappearance of cultural communities.

One of them is a pine tree in the Finnish town of Joutsa, whose role was reinterpreted by foreign authorities in the 19th century and used as a site of local jurisdiction and executions. Another is a tree in Tampere where hunters returning from bear ceremonies attached the skulls of the “king of the forest.” The third is the oak of Kuremäe, whose circumference has decreased by nearly a metre over the past century due to countless ritual touchings by visitors. The tree is sacred both to Orthodox believers and to the diminishing Votic community of the region.

The artist asks what values are carried by remembrance and the transmission of tradition—and what possible losses they might also entail.
