The red-eye effect occurs when a camera flash reflects off the retina in low-light conditions, causing the subject’s pupils to appear red in photographs. While traditionally seen as a technical flaw, by the late 20th century it had taken on symbolic meaning in amateur photography. This visual “signature” represents more than just a technological limitation – it captures the emotional tone of an era. Red eyes became a sign of joy, spontaneity, and shared moments. In this context, they reflect a kind of nostalgic romance, revealing the beauty of everyday life: imperfect and unfiltered.
