Blind print, 1/3
Inessa Saarits’s new series of blind prints forms a kind of map of bark beetle damage in selected Estonian forests.
Over the past years, the artist has collected tree bark from forests across Estonia in order to print the patterns created by bark beetles onto paper using a specially developed method. Although bark beetles play an important role as decomposers in the forest life cycle, unusually warm years have allowed them to produce three generations during a single summer instead of one. As a result, spruce trees are particularly threatened.
The blind prints reveal the delicate tunnel patterns created by different bark beetle species while also marking the death of the trees from which the prints originate.
