Karlova Obscura VIII, 2016

93 x 140 cm
€900

Pigment ink print, edition: 5 + 1 AP.

In “Karlova Obscura” (2016), Huimerind’s final thesis work, he turned 15 different rooms in Karlova district of Tartu into a “camera obscura” and photographed the interior and the outdoor view projected on to it. The Finnish photo artist Marja Pirila uses a similar technique to stage her portraits – in her series “Interior/Exterior” (1996-…) we see inhabitants in the natural environment, covered by a thin painting-like projection. While Pirila’s works feature the inhabitants as main characters, the model in Huimerind’s series is Karlova neighbourhood, which we see “posing” with its old timber houses and old twisted trees on the walls of rooms with different designs and functions.
