Mixed media spatial photomontage
Kallis Kivi is a series of mixed media spatial collages by Riina Varol, focusing on the element of earth and the relationship between the human body and the ground. The works explore petrification as a slow process, as well as the act of collecting and preserving stones.
The desire to capture and carry experiences through stones parallels the logic of photography – an attempt to hold onto a moment, extend its duration, and give it a physical form. As a counterbalance, the artist has created ceramic casts of her toes, which she leaves behind in place of the stones she takes, forming a gesture that negotiates the balance between taking and giving.
Through the collection and exchange of photographs and objects, a dialogue emerges between two bodies – the human and the earth. This relationship is not only visual but also sensory and embodied, opening space for new, personal experiences to unfold.
