photopolymer etching on Hahnemuhle paper
Initiated in 2024, this project challenges Western art history and serves as a feminist statement.
For the Free Mary project, Nelly Toussaint explored the Louvre Museum’s online collection of etchings, gathering all the prints that depicted the Virgin Mary.
With the help of artificial intelligence, she reworked the images to remove
Mary’s figure—freeing her from centuries of patriarchal representation.
Mary has left the room.
The project draws inspiration from the Free Britney movement, which began when Britney Spears was placed under her father’s legal guardianship. He held control over her life, career, and even her reproductive rights—reportedly managing her contraception to prevent her from having more children. In
response, her fans launched a movement to liberate her from this patriarchal system.
This work is constantly evolving, as Toussaint continues to rework Virgin Mary prints from museum collections worldwide.
Edited in 10 editions.
One edition if the work is part of the Päivi and Paavo Lipponen foundation ‘s collection.
