Fracture, 2021
Concrete, inkjet print on newsprint paper
“My artistic thesis to The Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki includes two art works, which are both each other’s counterparts and two manifestations of the same material and durational process. Fracture is the first part of my thesis and it was exhibited in gallery Forum Box, Helsinki in spring 2021. The work consists of 257 self casted concrete tiles and a photograph taken of the gallery wall (100 cm x 650 cm). The installation examines the dialogue and borderline between the exhibition space and artwork. Merging with the existing structures of the gallery, it guides the attention towards the materialities and dimensions of the factory hall-like space. The core of the exhibition is a delicate fracture making its way through the concrete tiles on the floor and continuing as a rift on a photographic print reaching all the way from the floor to the ceiling. The installation plays with the juxtaposition between the heavy mass of concrete and the immateriality of the thin crevice passing through the space. The notion of deconstruction is present in the work on several levels, suggesting a slow crumbling of both the gallery space and the representative image surface. Coincidental fragmentation that occurred during the casting process has defined the positions of the tiles and the path of the fracture.”
