Exalted Installation view, 2019
Photo and video Exalted is a video and photographic body of work made in an attempt to understand the power structures that oppress and shape bodies: gender, sexuality, class, family structures. Working with my hometown and family history within a very Catholic, and therefore, patriarchal country I am trying to realize a conversation between two bodies: the child and the adult, the subject and the artist. By using my own nieces and sisters as subjects the work makes an attempt to subvert the narrative of an oppressed body, to show a way out, not by by-passing trauma but by creating tools to overcome. The camera acts as an escape route, through the lens comes an effort towards subversion, liberation. Exalted is a dialogue between the before and after, a search for hope, an attempt to break the body free from all it’s constraints, To cut the gaze before it falls, to abolish identity before it’s formed, to allow the body to become wild, animal. What happens when you locate the power back to body, what does it become? What will it do? Some of the work has been purchased by Suomen Taideyhdisty (Finnish Art Society), it has been shortlisted for Athens Photo Festival taking place in Benaki Museum in June 2019, accepted as part of Queer Art Festival happening in Thessaloniki Museum of Photography in June 2019 and part of the work will be screened at Riga Photo Festival in Ka?epes Culture Centre in May 2019.
