Escaping to the Surface II, 2025
2x8S film
The project rethinks the relationship with urban space by observing the transformation of a part of Vilnius’s Old Town—from a somewhat chaotic childhood environment to a representative yet distant area of the city. It reveals subtle, personal connections to places as they persist in memories and experiences. The project raises questions about the sensory, childhood-formed human bond with the environment, as well as the layered nature of space and place and their changing dynamics. The work is composed of three parts: four photographs, a video loop, and a Tiffany 3D stained glass piece. The video loop (1 minute 24 seconds) serves as a reference to blinking eyes—to the act of observing. It was filmed on expired film stock in an attempt to evoke a sense of temporal dislocation. Yet it captures the emergence of new construction that radically transforms the area: homes now rising on the former sites of factories, surrounded by wooden houses.
