Inessa Saarits’s new series of blind embossings forms a map of bark beetle damage in selected Estonian forests.
Over the past year, the artist has collected tree bark from across Estonia and developed a method that allows her to print the bark beetle galleries onto paper. Although bark beetles are necessary decomposers in the forest life cycle, due to the extremely warm recent years, they have managed to produce three generations over one summer instead of just one. Their increased activity has put spruce trees especially at high risk of extinction.
The works highlight the intricate patterns of different beetle species, but also mark the death of the printed trees.
