Asjaolud, 2017
Video 21min
NB! The artwork does not have fixed measurements
This work was made during the artist´s stay in Estonia – a 21 minute long video work with the title “Asjaolud” in which te artist shows various interactions of waste containers with people, nature and their environment. Hannah Giese presented this work in the first of the two Exhibitions of “Freedom explained logically” at the Weltkunstzimmer Gallery in March 2018 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
She started the process of making this work out of her interest in the history of waste management in Estonia. She noticed that there is a difference in consumption and recycling of things in Estonia, compared to the western european countries she lived in (Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium) and started to investigate in this topic. While talking to people, hearing stories about the past, the changes and all kinds of personal anektodes, she continuously filmed daily life situations out of her kitchen and living room window. In the end of this process of working with film and text, Hannah decided to let the images speak for themselves, and to let the viewer take the role of the observer and witnesses daily life situations in a magnified frame.
