Ancient Towns I , 2007
Mare Vint’s work focused on the idea of the ideal, ordered landscape – a harmony between man-made structures and nature. Her landscapes appear recognizable, yet are not tied to any real locations. Instead, they reflect an idealized, dreamlike space where balance and silence prevail.
The series Cities of the Past offers a vision of places where time and space seem to have stopped. These cities appear simultaneously retrospective and modern – peaceful and pure, free of noise, objects, and people. Abstract and minimalist in form, the serigraphs carry a distinctly Nordic clarity and geometric atmosphere, where each motif reflects a timeless urban ideal, challenging hierarchies and creating pseudo-hierarchical structures between architecture and nature.
Vint’s delicate line and minimalist sense of space provide the viewer with a meditative experience.
This work is part of the collection of the Art Museum of Estonia (see collection entry). Works from Vint’s legendary White Cities and Cities of the Past series rarely appear on the art market – most recently, one was sold at the 2025 summer graphics auction of Eesti Kunstioksjonid for €3,600.
