Sini Ilves Emerging artist
Artist is based in: Finland
Sini Ilves (b.1998) is a Helsinki-based visual artist whose practice centers around painting and material processes. Working primarily with oil paint and dyed textiles, they create works that examine memory, transformation and bodily knowledge. Their latest works involve a plant-based colourant, hematein, that is used in biological staining and microscopy to reveal cellular structures otherwise invisible to the eye. Ilves is interested in the tension between making the unseen tangible and the impossibility of ever fully doing so. Ilves is currently finishing their MFA degree at the Academy of Fine Arts, Uniarts Helsinki, and is graduating in 2026. They have previously completed a degree at the Free Art School in Helsinki in 2022. Ilves has taken part in several group exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. Among other venues, their works have been displayed at Kuva/Tila gallery and the Cable Factory in Helsinki, and at the Halle & Quergalerie in Berlin. They also curated and participated in a summer exhibition at Kiskon kivimakasiini in Salo, Finland. Their works are part of the Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) Art Collection and several private collections.
