Rein Mägar

Rein Mägar (1944) is a freelance artist dedicated to watercolour painting. He graduated from the University of Graphic and Book Arts in Leipzig (1971) and has worked as an art editor in publishing houses (ER, Valgus, Bit). He started participating in exhibitions as a poster artist in 1972, a member of the Artists’ Union (1977), the Estonian Graphic Designers’ Union (1995) and the Estonian Watercolorists’ Society since 1998. Since then, his watercolours have been presented at all EWS exhibitions and since 2012 also at watercolour festivals organized by the European Confederation of Watercolor Associations (ECWS). Solo exhibitions have taken place in Vabadus (2009, 2014), Dragon (2020) and Viinistu barrel galleries (2022), as well as in many cultural institutions across Estonia. Rein Mägar has curated exhibitions at the Würth Art Gallery 2005-2017 and EWS exhibitions at Pärnu NAM and Võru City Gallery, in the last three years joint exhibitions with Finnish watercolourists. A collaborative exhibition of Estonian and Finnish watercolourists is being prepared at Kadrioru Gallery in January 2023. Rein Mägar has prepared and published three watercolour-themed prints: “Journey with aquarelles” (2014), “Estonian Watercolor 2018” and the Estonian-Finnish joint exhibition catalogue “Forest/Metsä” (2022).
