Maruta Gredzena belongs to the youngest generation of Latvian artists. She primarily works with ceramic sculptures and graphic techniques but is not afraid to experiment with various materials. The authors most prominent technique involves underglaze and overglaze drawings on crafted figurative porcelain sculptures and the newly developed paper sculpture author technique.. Motivation for the proportions of the sculpture portraits are found in unattainable ideal of combining child’s and an elderly person’s traits. It serves as a constant reminder of the necessity of joy in daily life. The artist works also feature several main themes, delving deeply into the side effects of migration, non-verbal communication, neurodivergency and social issues in the fast-paced contemporary era. Maruta Gredzena (born in 1987) completed her studies in the Ceramics Department of the Art Academy of Latvia in 2014. After completing her master studies in Latvia until 2020, she continued her creative activities in Spain, participating in various exhibitions and competitions. In 2020, she returned to Latvia and began her studies in the Master’s program in Graphic Arts at the Art Academy of Latvia graduation it June 2024. The artist has participated in several group exhibitions and organized six solo exhibitions. Has earned 2 honorable mentions, received Culture Capital support for creative work and has been selected as an emerging artist for first solo exhibition in Barcelona back in 2014. After few gap years of traveling the world and living abroad latest solo show has taken the place in Riga, Latvia, year 2023.
