Maria Sorjonen (b. 1994, Lappeenranta) works primarily with painting and sculpture. She has had 6 solo shows and many group exhibitions.

Her practice begins with an archive of found materials and family photographs, tracing how fragments of personal histories can open onto larger narratives.

She makes pigments and paints from ash, charcoal, sand, plants, and other collected matter. These materials enter her work as both remnants and carriers of memory, retaining something of where they come from while becoming something else through the act of painting. Her practice moves between material evidence and imagination, between what an object remembers and what it can be made to represent.
