Liis-Marleen Verilaskja
Artist's country of origin: Estonia
Liis-Marleen Verilaskja, born and raised in Estonia. Studied graphic arts in Estonian Academy of Arts and is continuing her studies in the Contemporary Art MA. Her practices include analog photography, printmaking, installations and performances, along video and sound works. Most notable connection between the topics she uses is “forgetting” and different aspects of it. For example, her graduation project “Cielle” focuses on the experience of seeing and forgetting dreams. “Cielle” has been exhibited three times, two of those were with the “Resemblance Through Contact. Grammar of Imprint” exhibition curated by Liina Siib and Maria Erikson. She does not believe only alive beings are capable of forgetting. So far artist has tackled this topic by using different techniques in printmaking. It is possible to see graphic arts as a form of memory – surface memory. From litho stones and paper to urban settings and forests, everything can “remember.” Thus creating a metaphysical space of endless information and memory. Her continuous practices are moving more and more towards investigating memory space. How can we access it? How does a place forget? How does this affect us as a society?
