Johannes Luoma ^{Emerging artist}

Johannes Luoma (b. 1999) is a Finnish artist whose work focuses on transferring digital image prints onto wood and metal surfaces. His goal is to create illusion-like visual surfaces where the use of different sensory perceptions is not only allowed but encouraged. How can a digitally produced image be heard or felt just by looking at it?

In Luoma’s three-dimensional works, sculpture and digital photography converge. His visual storytelling is often abstract, posing the question: “What am I seeing?” A strong sense of movement is present in his otherwise static pieces, and the artist invites viewers to observe them from various perspectives: from afar, up close, from the side, above, or at eye level.

Luoma’s interest in the complex creation process of images stems from a conflicting emotional state where fascination and fear intertwine.

His art has increasingly aligned with the concept of post-internet art: how the daily use of the internet shapes our viewing experiences and even the ways in which art is made. His working method resembles the logic of social media – attention divided across multiple elements simultaneously. His process is multi-layered and fast-paced, drawing visual influence from the constant flow of images and videos on social media.

Luoma’s multimedia works have been exhibited in group shows such as the 97th Annual Exhibition of the Turku Artists’ Association, at the Turku Art House, and at Viljo Hurme’s studio home. His works have been acquired by the Kuopio Art Museum collection. In early spring 2023, he collaborated with fellow students to create a sculptural installation at Nallikari Beach in Oulu as part of a music festival.

Luoma will graduate as a visual artist from Turku Arts Academy in spring 2025. He completed his exchange studies at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) in Valencia.
