Roma Salė (Roma Mikalauskytė, b. 1999 in Klaipėda) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vilnius, working in the fields of site-specific art, light projection, and material-based installation. In 2025, she completed her Master’s in the Site-Specific Art program at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, having previously earned a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Arts in 2023. During her studies, she took part in an exchange program at the Estonian Academy of Arts, specializing in Glass art. Her artistic practice combines optical phenomena, light, materiality, and spatial experience, exploring the relationship between visual art and technology while intertwining hypothetical contexts of time and space. Her work evolves actively across both academic and contemporary art fields. Since 2022, she has held eight solo exhibitions, including Travel Agency (2025) at the Lithuanian National Museum of Art – Radvila Palace Museum of Art; The Fate of the Butterfly (2024) at the Museum of Energy and Technology; two iterations of Hyperplane (2023–2024) exhibited at the former “Lelija” sewing factory and the VAA “Titanikas” exhibition halls; and Happiness Index at the “5 MALŪNAI” gallery and Chess hall. She has participated in over 15 group exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad, including Milan Design Week, international festivals, and ArtVilnius programs. R. Salė consistently engages in cultural events such as Culture Night, Vilnius Gallery Weekend, Design Days, and presents large-scale light projects at the Vilnius Light Festival. Her research practice is complemented by presentations at Research Council of Lithuania conferences, published abstracts, active application of light installations in scenography and performative events. In 2024 – 2025, she received the Antanas Smetona Presidential Scholarship for academic and civic achievements. She has twice been awarded (2023 – 2024 and 2024 – 2025) Research Council of Lithuania grants for projects that explore light and materials in ways that distinguish light art from applied arts. Roma’s projects are characterized by poetic light dramaturgy, the use of transparent materials, and contextual spatial reflection. In 2024, she completed an internship at light artist Justas Bø’s studio Liustrai. She is currently preparing for a residency at the studio of the Italian artits duo Quiet Ensemble and developing new projects that will further expand her investigations into light art and spatial experience.
