Josefin Selander

Kunstniku asukohariik: Rootsi

Josefin Selander is a Swedish visual artist whose practice explores drawing, site-specificity, and the emotional relationship between people and place. With a background in graffiti and public art, her work is rooted in direct engagement with environments—both urban and natural. She investigates how place can shape artistic expression, often using drawing as a means of mapping presence, memory, and change.

In 2025, Selander held her first solo exhibition, Vattnets Ögon (The Eyes of Water), at Backbeatbolaget in Sandviken. That same year, she was named a finalist in The Thinking Hand, Sweden’s national drawing competition. Her drawings for the competition are viewable on the Royal Palaces’ website until June 25, 2025. Her master’s project from Umeå Academy of Fine Arts is currently exhibited in Infinite Proposals at Bildmuseet, on view through August 2025.

Prior to her academic studies, Selander was active in the graffiti scene and created several acclaimed projects in public space. Notable exhibitions include Why Graffiti at Växjö Art Gallery and Your Voice at Alingsås Art Gallery. Her interest in place-based practice has led to residencies in both Haparanda (2023) and Sandviken (2024), where she responded to local environments through cycling, observation, and drawing. Her Sandviken residency and exhibition were supported by the Swedish Arts Council and several regional cultural institutions, and works from this period have been acquired into the Swedish Arts Council’s collection.
